The son of Count Maximilien IV de Lalaing, he was raised in England before moving to Brussels in 1875. His artistic training took place at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, where he studied under Jean-François Portaels and Louis Gallait. As a painter, he worked in a realistic, naturalistic style, focusing on portraiture and historical scenes. He also began sculpting in 1884, following the encouragement of Thomas Vinçotte and Jef Lambeaux.
