Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor y Zaragoza (1875-1960) stands as a pivotal figure in Galician art history, recognized primarily for his masterful portraits—particularly those capturing the solemn dignity of King Alfonso XII—and his unwavering dedication to safeguarding Spain’s artistic heritage. Born in Ferrol, Spain, he possessed an early aptitude for drawing, culminating in a remarkable commission: sketching the dying monarch at St. Elizabeth Hospital, a portrait that remains within his family's possession and serves as testament to his prodigious talent.
