The Artistic Practice of Peter Kogler
Peter Kogler is an Austrian multimedia artist, painter, sculptor, and university teacher. His work often involves the creation of immersive, illusionistic spatial labyrinths that occupy the ceilings, walls, and floors of a space, encompassing the viewer's entire field of vision. These environments are constructed through the use of repetitive pattern systems printed on paper strips, computer animations, and video projections.
His artistic motifs frequently include pipes, ants, globes, and brains. In his early career, Kogler explored architecture, sign languages, and signal languages through drawings, performances, and film works. Since 1984, he has integrated computers into his practice, and by the end of the 1990s, computer animation became a primary form of expression. His work utilizes the principle of repetition as an analytical method, creating dynamic, moving spaces that evoke a sense of endlessness.
