Sanatçı Özgeçmişi

Chiara Camoni: A Weaver of Chance and Memory

Born in Piacenza, Italy, in 1974, Chiara Camoni’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in the landscape and traditions of her native Tuscany. Her work, a captivating blend of drawing, sculpture, and installation, transcends mere representation to become an immersive experience—a dialogue between the tangible world and the intangible realms of memory, ritual, and collective creation. Camoni's practice isn’t simply about making art; it’s about inhabiting a process, allowing materials and chance encounters to guide her hand and shape her vision.

Initially trained at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan, Camoni’s formal education provided a foundation, but it was her subsequent work with the National Archaeological Museum of Naples that profoundly shaped her artistic sensibility. Immersed in the echoes of ancient civilizations and the stories embedded within artifacts, she developed a fascination with the cyclical nature of time, the persistence of memory, and the ways in which objects carry traces of their past.

The Language of Found Materials

Central to Camoni’s artistic approach is her masterful utilization of found materials. Rather than seeking pristine or manufactured elements, she actively engages with discarded fragments—clay, dyed fabrics, loom-woven remnants, and natural pigments gathered from the surrounding landscape. This deliberate choice reflects a core tenet of her work: an embrace of imperfection, a celebration of the ephemeral, and a rejection of traditional notions of artistic value. Her studio in Fabbiano, a small mountain village on the Versilian coast, becomes a laboratory for this process—a space where materials are not merely assembled but imbued with meaning through repeated interaction and collaborative effort.

Camoni’s work is often described as “situated,” drawing heavily from Donna Haraway's concept of situated knowledge. This means that her art isn’t created in a vacuum, but rather emerges from a specific context—the village of Fabbiano, the relationships within her artistic community, and the rhythms of daily life. Her grandmother’s legacy, particularly the daily drawings she commissioned until her passing, serves as a poignant reminder of how memory and tradition can be actively preserved through creative practice.

A Journey Through Major Exhibitions

Camoni's work has garnered significant recognition within both Italy and internationally. In 2024, she achieved a notable milestone with a solo exhibition at Pirelli Hangarbicocca in Milan, showcasing the breadth of her artistic vision under the title *Call and Gather. Sister, Moths and Flame Twisters. Lioness Bones, Snakes and Stones*. This expansive presentation solidified her position as one of Italy’s leading contemporary artists.

Her work is also part of several prestigious museum collections, including the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art in the UK, a testament to its enduring appeal and conceptual depth. Recent exhibitions include *murmur, buzz, hiss and rub* at Cample Line, Dumfriesshire, Scotland; *Inizio fine*. *Rotondo. Tutte le cose del mondo.* Palazzo Collicola, Spoleto, IT; *Whispers, world above, world below*, A Tail of A Tub, Rotterdam, NL (2023); and *La Meraviglia*, CEAAC, Strasbourg, FR (2021). Furthermore, she represented Italy at the 61st International Art Exhibition Venice Biennale in 2026 with the project *Con te con tutto*.

Themes of Ritual and Collective Creation

Camoni’s art frequently explores themes of ritual, community, and the transmission of knowledge. Her collaborative projects—often involving women from her village—are not simply artistic endeavors but acts of collective remembering, honoring ancestral practices, and forging new connections across generations. The use of materials associated with domestic crafts—ceramics, weaving, dyeing—further reinforces this connection to tradition and the everyday rhythms of life.

Her work is a powerful meditation on time, memory, and the enduring legacy of human experience. Through her unique approach to found materials and collaborative practices, Chiara Camoni creates art that is both deeply personal and profoundly universal – inviting viewers to contemplate their own place within the vast tapestry of history and culture.
