Turbulence and Texture
A heavy, overcast sky dominates the upper two-thirds of this composition, pressing down upon a dark, churning sea. The palette is strictly monochromatic, built from layers of grey, charcoal, black, and white. A thin, pale ochre band marks the horizon, providing the only break in the somber tones. Through thick, impasto brushstrokes, the artist captures a sense of violent motion. The surface is highly textural, where the physical application of paint defines the form of the water and the weight of the clouds.
