The Lineage of the Printmaker

Born in Gulbarga, Karnataka, Vijay Bagodi has carved a profound niche within the landscape of contemporary Indian printmaking. His journey into the depths of graphic arts began with formal training at the Ideal Fine Arts Institute, eventually leading him to the prestigious M.S. University of Baroda. It was here, under the auspices of the Karnataka Lalit Kala Akademi Scholarship, that he pursued a Diploma in Painting and a Post Diploma in Printmaking (Graphic Arts) between 1984 and 1986. A pivotal moment in his artistic evolution occurred during his time in Vadodara when an exhibition of David Hockney’s prints by the British Council fundamentally altered his trajectory; inspired by the power of the medium, Bagodi made the decisive choice to transition from painting to become a dedicated printmaker.

His technical foundation is rooted in the Baroda school, where he developed a mastery over Intaglio. His creative process often begins with a deep-seated love for the line, a trait carried over from his early student days. In his practice, images emerge through meticulous linear explorations, where tones and textures are layered gradually to build complex, breathing compositions. This disciplined approach allows him to achieve a tactile depth that gives his prints a nearly sculptural quality, utilizing techniques such as hatching and cross-hatching to manipulate light and shadow.

Emotional Landscapes and Social Commentary

The thematic evolution of Bagodi’s work reflects a deepening engagement with the human condition. His early explorations were deeply intimate, focusing on personal spaces and the delicate nuances of human emotion—capturing themes of love, desire, longing, and the quiet ache of disappointment. One can see this reflected in works like Isolation, Intimacy and Separation, where he uses monochromatic etching to create a visceral dialogue between presence and absence, weaving a narrative where sorrow and closeness exist in a tension-filled dance.

As his career progressed, Bagodi’s gaze expanded from the internal psyche to the external world. His subject matter shifted toward poignant socio-political commentary, addressing the broader, often harsher realities of society. Through his prints, he began to depict themes of societal violence, inequality, deprivation, and the devastating impact of both natural and man-made disasters. This transition allowed his work to serve as a mirror to the complexities of modern existence, using the expressive power of the etched line to give voice to the marginalized and the displaced.

A Legacy of Excellence and Education

Throughout his prolific career, Bagodi has been recognized with numerous prestigious accolades that underscore his significance in the global printmaking community. His achievements include:

• National Award at the 40th National Exhibition of Contemporary Art in 1997.
• Best Print of the Year at the 71st AIFACS Annual Exhibition of Graphic Arts in 2000.
• Honourable Mention Certificate at the 5th Bharat Bhavan International Biennale of Print Art in 2001.

Beyond his personal practice, Bagodi has been a cornerstone of the academic and collaborative art community. He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Head of the Department of Graphic Arts at The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda until his retirement in June 2021. His commitment to the medium is further evidenced by his role as a co-founder of the CHHAAP Vadodara Printmaking Workshop, a vital studio providing space and residency for fellow artists. His influence has reached far beyond India, with participation in international biennials and exhibitions spanning from Beijing and France to New Zealand and Korea.
