Three Simple Steps Handmålad i olja, bara för dina väggar

A Visionary of Form and Memory

Anant Vijay Joshi is a Mumbai-based artist whose practice serves as a profound critique of our modern culture of abundance. His work often navigates the delicate boundary between the innocent charm of childhood and the unsettling realities of adult perception. Through a meticulous exploration of objects, he examines how the things we hold dear can simultaneously shape our identities and mask deeper, more chaotic truths. By engaging with materials that evoke nostalgia, Joshi invites viewers to look beyond the surface of the familiar.

The artist’s creative language is uniquely defined by his distinctive use of toys as a primary medium. Although toys were absent from his own childhood, he has embraced them as potent instruments for artistic expression. He utilizes these seemingly trivial objects to explore complex themes of power, perception, and reality. His process often involves the transformation of these items; during a pivotal residency in Amsterdam, he began purchasing old toys, dismantling them to strip away their fixed identities, and recontextualizing them to reflect his own experiences of cultural adjustment.

Technique and Materiality

Joshi’s technical mastery allows him to create works that are as visually arresting as they are conceptually deep. While his early explorations relied on repurposed readymade toys, his more recent developments involve the creation of his own bespoke "toys" using painted ceramic and fiberglass. These sculptures and installations often feature gleaming, shiny finishes and vibrant colors that initially draw the viewer in with a sense of playfulness. However, upon closer inspection, this luster gives way to more unsettling details, such as severed heads or trunk-less limbs, which evoke an aura of violent chaos.

Beyond static sculpture, Joshi is renowned for his dramatic kinetic room installations. These works amplify the impact of his mutated figures through a sophisticated use of light, shadows, and reflections. In some of his most celebrated installations, he has utilized rotating steel rods to create mesmerizing movement, capturing the pulsing energy of urban life. His ability to manipulate sensory experiences—sometimes even incorporating scents like ittar into his installations—demonstrates a commitment to creating immersive environments that challenge the viewer's sense of stability and order.

Exhibition History and Artistic Legacy

Throughout his career, Anant Vijay Joshi has participated in significant exhibitions that have solidified his presence in the contemporary art landscape. His work has been featured in notable venues such as Bikaner House and through prestigious platforms like the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, where his installation Three Simple Steps left a lasting impression. His exhibition history includes diverse showcases ranging from Navel: One and Many to Raised Eyebrow, each reflecting his ongoing investigation into how we perceive the world around us.

The significance of Joshi's work lies in its ability to pierce through the veneer of societal order. By presenting fragmented and mutated forms, he reminds his audience that the objects and traditions we use to raise future generations are powerful tools of cultural programming. His art stands as a testament to the idea that even the most playful elements of our lives can be re-examined to reveal the complex, often turbulent, structures of power and existence that underpin our shared reality.
