Osnovne informacije

Early Life, Family and Training

Born in Falaise, France, around 1623, Jean Tiger entered a world where the visual arts were becoming increasingly structured by the formal institutions of the French crown. His early development as a painter was shaped by his apprenticeship under Pierre Mignard (I), a connection that would provide the foundational technical discipline necessary for his later specialization in portraiture. This period of instruction established the professional trajectory that would eventually lead him toward the highest circles of French society.

Tiger’s personal life was closely tied to the industrious circles of Troyes. He married Marie Oudot, the daughter of the printer Jean (III) Oudot, a union that linked his artistic practice to the established trades of the era. This domestic stability provided a backdrop to a career defined by social mobility and professional advancement. The family's commitment to the arts was further evidenced by his son, Jean-Baptiste Tiger, who would eventually follow in his father's footsteps, succeeding him as peintre ordinaire du roi in 1696.

Career and Academic Recognition

Tiger established himself primarily as a painter of portraits, a pursuit that granted him access to the highest circles of French society. His professional standing was solidified through his service as gentilhomme de la chambre to His Royal Highness, the Duke of Orléans. This position placed him within the intimate orbit of the nobility, providing a steady stream of subjects for his brush.

The year 1675 marked a significant ascent in his formal career. On March 2, he was admitted as an Agrégé to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. This recognition was followed shortly thereafter by his induction as a full member of the Academy on October 5. These achievements confirmed his status among the elite practitioners of his era.

His reception into the Academy was marked by the presentation of specific works intended to demonstrate his technical proficiency. These pieces included portraits of the painter Nicolas Loir and Henri Testelin. Such works were essential to his standing within the institution, securing his place in the official registry of French artists.

Key Works and Artistic Achievements

Tiger’s ascent within the French academic tradition was marked by his successful reception into the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. His admission as a full member in 1675 was secured through the presentation of formal reception pieces, specifically portraits of the painter Nicolas Loir and Henri Testelin. These works demonstrated the technical proficiency required to navigate the rigid hierarchies of the Parisian art world during the Grand Siècle.

Among his most significant surviving contributions is the Portrait of Nicolas Loir, an oil on canvas created about 1675. This large-scale portrait, measuring 1.55 m in height and 0.89 m in width, offers a substantial presence that reflects the dignity of his subject. The work is currently held by the Musée du Louvre and remains on long-term loan to the Château de Versailles, where it continues to represent the era's formal portraiture traditions.

Later Years and Death

In his later years, Tiger moved away from the immediate orbit of the royal court to settle in Troyes. His presence in the provincial art scene was marked by professional friction; in 1692, he became embroiled in a dispute with the local painters' guild. Such conflicts were common among artists navigating the complex regulations of regional craft organizations during the late seventeenth century.

The final chapter of his life was closely tied to his domestic circumstances. Following the death of his wife, Marie Oudot, an inventory of his personal possessions was conducted on June 12, 1698. This record provides a rare, tangible glimpse into the material reality of his final months. Shortly after these events, Tiger passed away in Paris on December 30, 1698.
