The Life and Art of Firmin Baes
Born in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, Belgium, Firmin Baes was raised within a family of artists. His father, Henri Baes, was a decorative painter and architect, and his uncle Jean-Baptiste Baes was also an architect. Following in his father's footsteps, Baes trained as a decorator, working on patrician houses and decorative panels for hotels in Brussels. His formal artistic education took place at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, where he studied alongside Emile Fabry and Victor Rousseau. During this period, he became involved with the Académie de la Patte de Dindon, a free academy located in a cafe on the Grand-Place in Brussels.
Baes's artistic career saw him achieve both domestic and international recognition. In 1900, he exhibited an oil on canvas painting titled Archers at the Pour l'Art show, which earned him a bronze medal at the World's fair of Paris. He was later made an Officer in the Order of the Crown in 1923. Beyond his visual arts, he was an amateur actor and a writer, publishing an illustrated booklet in 1941 titled Histoires de peintres racontées et illustrées par Firmin Baes, which contained anecdotes regarding painters and their work.

From around 1900, Baes became particularly skilled in working with pastel, a medium he used almost exclusively. He developed a virtuoso technique for applying pastel on canvas, often using his thumb or little finger to apply powder. This method allowed him to create compositions with a velvety delicacy and a range of luminous colors. His work in this medium is noted for its cold realism, a high level of observation, and a sure line. Additionally, Baes was an able draftsman who excelled in charcoal drawing on large sheets and was active as a lithographer, designing various exhibition posters for the Pour l'Art artist circle.
