A Life of Color and Movement

The story begins in Cayey, Puerto Rico, where Félix José Bonilla Norat enters the world on October 28, 1912. A natural talent emerges early; by age eight, he is already creating his first works. His path leads from the local influence of Ramón Frade to the studios of Boston, Massachusetts, at the Child Walker School of Fine Arts. The trajectory shifts toward Europe through a government scholarship. In Madrid, he enters the Academia de San Fernando, followed by studies in Paris under André Lhote and Othon Friez. By 1938, his presence is felt in the Salón de las Tullerías in Paris, where six of his paintings are exhibited.

The mid-century brings a sudden change in scenery and duty. Following his studies in Florence, where he earns a degree in Mural Painting, he moves to New York in 1939. The quiet of the studio is interrupted by the onset of war. In February 1942, he enlists in the U.S. Army. Serving as a First Lieutenant in the Signal Corps, he becomes part of the "Monuments Men," a group tasked with protecting cultural treasures from destruction. His work involves documenting the realities of conflict, including photographing liberated concentration camps.

Evolution of an Eclectic Vision

Returning to Puerto Rico after his service, Bonilla Norat settles into a period of intense experimentation and teaching. He becomes a professor at the University of Puerto Rico from 1956 to 1975, instructing students in color theory. His artistic language refuses to remain static. The works of the 1950s and 1960s carry the weight of Surrealism, marked by dense symbolism and intense poses. As time progresses, his style shifts again. Later portraits and landscapes adopt a more relaxed, expressionistic atmosphere.

He pushes the boundaries of the canvas through several distinct approaches:

  • The integration of Op Art and Kinetic Art influences in the 1970s.
  • Experiments with photographic emulsion for serigraphy.
  • The use of unconventional lighting techniques.
  • The incorporation of found materials collected from beaches into his pieces.

Legacy and Contribution

Beyond the canvas, Bonilla Norat shapes the institutional landscape of Puerto Rican art. He co-founds Estudio 17 and is a founding member of the Asociación Pro-School of Plastic Arts. His leadership extends to the Borinquen 12 cooperative, where he serves as director. As an art critic for the San Juan Star from 1976 to 1987, his voice reaches the public, providing analysis and context for a generation of artists.

His career concludes in San Juan, where he passes away on July 17, 1992. He leaves behind nearly seven hundred works that span realism, impressionism, and abstraction. His influence remains visible through the students he mentored and the organizations he helped build, marking him as a central figure of the Generación de 1950.
