His travels to Paris allowed him to experience the Impressionist art scene, and a subsequent trip to Italy influenced his style, moving him toward Neue Sachlichkeit and a more objective approach to subject matter.
Throughout his career, Hartmann was deeply involved in the German art community. He was a member of the Hamburgische Sezession and later the Deutscher Künstlerbund. His professional life included teaching at a private art school and serving as the head of the painting class at the Landeskunstschule Hamburg. His work has been featured in various exhibitions, and he was a recipient of the Edwin-Scharff-Preis.
