The Artistic Evolution of Arman

Born Armand Fernandez in Nice, France, the artist known as Arman was a painter, sculptor, visual artist, jewelry designer, illustrator, draftsperson, and performance artist. His early training began with oil painting and photography, skills learned from his father, Antonio Fernandez. After studying philosophy and mathematics, he attended the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Nice and later the École du Louvre in Paris, where he focused on archaeology and Asian art. His career saw a significant shift when he began working with Cachets—rubber stamp marks on paper and fabric—following an exhibition for Kurt Schwitters. In 1957, he chose to sign his works simply as "Arman," an homage to Van Gogh.

Arman is widely recognized for his Accumulations and his work involving the destruction and recomposition of objects. His Accumulations often consist of vast quantities of similar items, such as watches, axes, or musical instruments, arranged within transparent polyester castings or Plexiglas cases. He also developed the concept of Poubelles, which are collections of strewn refuse. His work explored various themes, including the use of tools, furniture, and automobile parts, as well as the creation of large-scale public sculptures like Long Term Parking and Hope for Peace.

Movements and Recognition

As a founding member of the Nouveau Réalisme group, Arman helped define a new perspective on reality in response to industrial expansion. His practice also saw him affiliated with the ZERO art movement. Throughout his career, he moved between France and the United States, eventually becoming a citizen of the United States in 1973. His work has been featured in numerous international exhibitions and is held in various public collections, including the Detroit Institute of Arts.
