The Visual Narrative
The painting depicts the biblical story of the flight into Egypt, featuring Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus traveling on a donkey. The scene is set against an expansive backdrop of mountains, which provides a sense of scale to the landscape. Within the composition, several other figures are present, including one man holding a staff and another individual carrying a bowl. Two cows can be seen in the background, with one positioned near the left side of the image and the other towards the right.
Composition and Detail
The artwork showcases detailed figures dressed in various clothing styles that contribute to its historical character. The terrain is depicted as uneven, consisting of rocks and sparse vegetation. A dense forest flanks the left side of the scene, while a distant cityscape is visible against the mountain range. The artist utilizes an earthy color palette, punctuated by striking red tones in certain attire, such as the tunic worn by the man walking alongside the group.
