Born in Ystalyfera, within the Swansea Valley of South Wales, Evans’ early years were defined by the grit and toil of the coal mines. His journey from the pits to the palette began in 1911 through part-time classes at the Swansea School of Art. After a decade of working underground, Evans pursued his studies more deeply, eventually winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. The work of Vincent Evans serves as a vital historical record, documenting the lives of mine workers during a period of significant industrial transition. His oeuvre is characterized by a powerful depiction of the human condition, particularly through his focus on the coal miners of South Wales.
