Born in Brussels around 1646, this artist—often affectionately known by the moniker Il Fiammingo or "The Fleming"—embodied a rare artistic synthesis. De Longe’s formative years were defined by rigorous training under Jacques de Potter in Brussels. However, the artist's ambitions could not be contained by the borders of Flanders. Following a period of travel through Germany, France, and England, de Longe arrived in Rome in 1680. From Ricci, he learned the art of capturing movement and atmospheric depth; from Draghi, he adopted a sense of idealized, classical composition. He took the structural integrity of his Flemish training and infused it with the theatricality and emotional intensity required by the Italian Baroque aesthetic.

His career reached new heights through the patronage of influential figures like Agostino Bonisoli and the Bishop of Piacenza, Giorgio Barni. These connections allowed him to transition from a traveling painter to a central figure in the religious and civic life of Northern Italy. His ability to execute large-scale fresco works made him an indispensable asset to the local clergy, as he could transform the cold stone of cathedral domes into celestial visions. His work on the interior of the dome of the church of Santa Brigida in Piacenza serves as a testament to this period of immense productivity and technical mastery.

The Zenith of Achievement

The crowning achievement of Robert de Longe’s career remains the breathtaking cupola of the Oratory of San Giovanni in Cortemaggiore, commissioned in 1705. This monumental project represents the absolute zenith of his artistic prowess. In this work, the viewer witnesses the perfect marriage of his dual identities: the meticulous, luminous color palette of a Flemish master combined with the sweeping, dramatic compositions of the Italian Baroque.
