      The Intersections of Labor and Identity

      Jen Liu stands as a profound voice in contemporary American art, weaving together the disparate threads of labor, economy, and national identity into a cohesive visual narrative. Born in 1976, Liu has cultivated a practice that refuses to be confined by a single medium, instead moving fluidly between the visceral presence of performance, the temporal depth of video, and the tactile permanence of painting. Her academic journey, rooted in a BA from Oberlin College and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, provided the intellectual foundation for her explorations into how global economic shifts impact individual and collective identities.

      Visualizing Economic Structures

      In Liu’s work, the abstract concepts of macroeconomics are rendered tangible and often unsettling. She possesses a unique ability to expose the hidden mechanics of production and the gendered nature of work. This is perhaps most strikingly realized in her celebrated 2016 video, The Pink Detachment, and her evocative Pink Slime Caesar Shift series. Through these works, she interrogates the ways in which labor is categorized and controlled, using color and movement to mirror the complexities of modern industrial and social structures.
