Biografija umetnika

A Life Shaped by Memory and Loss

In the small streets of Yelisavetgrad, within the Russian Empire, a young boy named Issachar Ber Ryback began to see the world through a lens that would later define an entire era of Jewish expression. His early years in Ukraine were marked by the profound shadows of history. The violence of the pogroms was not merely a distant news report for him; it was a personal tragedy that claimed his father’s life. This deep, internal wound shaped his artistic purpose, driving him to seek a way to memorialize the vanishing world of the shtetl.

His formal training began at the Kiev Art School, where he studied under masters like Alexander Bogomazov and Alexandra Exter. These teachers introduced him to the sharp, fractured language of modernism. By 1916, alongside El Lissitzky, Ryback undertook expeditions through Ukraine and Belarus. They moved through villages, documenting the customs, the synagogues, and the faces of a people, gathering the visual fragments that would later be reconstructed in his art. He was not merely observing; he was collecting the soul of a culture before it could be erased.

The Language of the Avant-Garde

As the political tides shifted following the October Revolution, Ryback found himself moving through Moscow and Berlin, part of a movement that sought to redefine Yiddish culture through a modern, secular lens. In Kyiv, he helped found the Arts Section of the Kultur-Lige, an organization dedicated to the development of a new Jewish identity. His work during this period was a bold experiment in blending the old with the new. He took the traditional motifs of his childhood—Hebrew letters, Torah scrolls, and the heavy architecture of synagogues—and reconfigured them using the aggressive geometry of Cubism and the fractured planes of Cubo-Futurism.

His 1923 publication, Shtetl, My Destroyed Home, a Memorial, remains a profound achievement. Through lithography, he captured the weight of everyday life in the village. These were not light or whimsical images; they featured asymmetrical shapes and somber tones that reflected the exhaustion of a people living under constant threat. He used the very tools of the European avant-garde to give a permanent, modern voice to the traditions of the East.

From Berlin to Paris

The artist's path eventually led him through the heart of the German art scene. In Berlin, he joined the Novembergruppe and participated in the Der Sturm group, exhibiting works that demonstrated his mastery of Cubist forms. Yet, as the years progressed, his style began to shift once more. The sharp edges of his earlier work softened as he moved toward the more emotional, colorful approach associated with the School of Paris.

In 1926, Ryback settled in Paris, a move that brought him into the orbit of other great Jewish modernists. His later paintings took on a different quality, moving away from the analytical rigor of Cubism toward an expressionistic warmth. Even as his technique changed, his subject matter remained anchored to his roots. He continued to explore themes of Jewish spiritual life, creating works that possessed a more romantic and ethereal light.

His life ended far from the Ukrainian villages of his youth. He passed away in Paris in 1935, shortly after a retrospective exhibition had opened to celebrate his work. Though his time was short, he left behind a vast body of work—spanning lithography, sculpture, stage design, and painting—that serves as a vital visual record of a world that was being systematically destroyed around him.
