Opis umetničkog dela

Garden is a floor sculpture by Hamra Abbas inspired by Mughal gardens and idyllic scenes depicted in miniature paintings. Historically, their style intended to represent an earthly utopia in which humans coexist with nature in perfect harmony. The imagery at work plays on the aesthetics of the desire for a blissful paradisiacal land, a feature found in many traditions worldwide. However, unlike a traditional garden, this garden has no vertical or horizontal enclosure. The earthly waterfalls, rocks, flowers and a tree that reaches into the heavenly stars above are all interconnected.Using the traditional marble and stone inlay technique from Lahore, the work examines the symbolic significance of garden images in relation to architecture through its evocative power and aesthetics to communicate that which is beyond description.

Biografija umetnika

Hamra Abbas: Exploring Identity Through Fragile Forms

Hamra Abbas, born in Kuwait in 1976, is a Pakistani contemporary artist whose work delves into profound themes of cultural heritage, personal experience, and the interplay between vulnerability and resilience. Her artistic journey began with formal training in sculpture and Indo-Persian miniature painting at the National College of Arts in Lahore—a grounding in traditions that would later inform her distinctive approach to artmaking. Departing from these established styles, Abbas skillfully integrates digital art, installation pieces, and performance into her practice, reflecting a dynamic engagement with contemporary mediums.
  • Early Influences: Abbas’s formative years were marked by exposure to diverse cultural landscapes—from Kuwait to Berlin and Boston—experiences that instilled in her an understanding of displacement and the transformative power of movement.
  • The Concept of Garden: Central to Abbas's artistic vision is the metaphor of a garden, representing not merely botanical beauty but also ecological balance and a symbolic allusion to paradise. This concept permeates her oeuvre, shaping her exploration of themes like loss, memory, and renewal.
  • Return to Pakistan & Marble Inlay: Upon returning to her homeland, Pakistan, Abbas experienced a significant shift in her artistic sensibilities. Inspired by the region’s rich cultural heritage—particularly the intricate marble inlay tradition—she incorporated this technique into her work, signifying a reconnection with roots and embracing permanence as opposed to fleeting ephemerality.

Technique & Material Exploration: From Sculpture to Digital Media

Initially trained in sculpture and miniature painting, Abbas’s artistic exploration expanded beyond traditional mediums. She embraced digital art forms—particularly generative algorithms—allowing her to manipulate textures and patterns in ways that would have been impossible with conventional tools. This experimentation reflects a willingness to challenge established conventions and push the boundaries of artistic expression. Furthermore, she incorporates installation pieces that engage spatial dimensions and invite viewers into immersive experiences. Performance art constitutes another crucial element of Abbas’s practice, where she utilizes her body as medium to convey emotions and ideas—a deliberate departure from static representations.
  • Sculpture & Miniature Painting Foundation: Her initial training instilled a meticulous attention to detail and an understanding of craftsmanship rooted in classical traditions.
  • Digital Art Integration: Abbas’s use of generative algorithms introduces computational processes into her artistic workflow, resulting in visually arresting textures and patterns.
  • Installation Pieces & Spatial Engagement: These immersive environments encourage viewers to contemplate the artwork within a broader context—challenging conventional notions of viewing experience.
