A Dialogue Between Dimensions: The World of Davide Balliano
Davide Balliano, born in Turin, Italy, in 1983, is an artist whose work exists on a compelling threshold—a space between painting and sculpture, abstraction and architecture, control and chance. His journey, beginning with a foundation in photography, has led him to a practice deeply rooted in the exploration of existential themes within the context of contemporary technology and our evolving relationship with the sublime. Balliano’s relocation to New York in 2006 proved pivotal, marking a decisive shift from capturing reality through the lens to constructing it on canvas and beyond. He now lives and works in the vibrant energy of this city, yet his artistic sensibility remains profoundly connected to the austere geometries and architectural landscapes of his native Italy. From Photography to Precise Abstraction
Initially trained as a photographer, Balliano’s transition to painting wasn't merely a change in medium but a fundamental reorientation of perspective. He found himself drawn not to representing the world, but to building it—layer by layer, stroke by stroke. This shift is characterized by an almost monastic dedication to precision and minimalism. His paintings aren’t impulsive expressions; they are meticulously crafted objects born from a gradual, intensely manual process. The initial stages involve hand-drawing signature arches, underpainted in dark acrylics, followed by the painstaking application of thin layers of white plaster. This surface is then subjected to sanding, buffing, and scoring, revealing the natural grain of the wood beneath—a subtle disruption that hints at a deeper history within the work itself. The final form emerges through diluted washes of paint allowed to drip down the canvas under gravity, introducing an element of controlled unpredictability that defines each piece’s unique orientation. While his early works were largely monochromatic, Balliano has recently incorporated red and ochre tones, enriching his palette while maintaining a delicate balance between order and organic movement. The Architectural Dialogue & Existential Inquiry
Balliano's research consistently operates on the “thin line of demarcation between painting and sculpture,” as he himself describes it. His work isn’t isolated; it actively engages in dialogue with its surroundings, particularly architectural spaces. The influence of Turin’s modernist structures is palpable—not through direct representation, but through an underlying sensibility that prioritizes geometric abstraction and a sense of spatial awareness. This engagement extends beyond the physical realm, delving into profound existential questions about identity in the age of technology and humanity's relationship with the sublime. His pieces are not simply visually striking; they serve as meditations on our place within a rapidly changing world, prompting viewers to contemplate the boundaries between the tangible and intangible, the constructed and the natural.Major Exhibitions & Institutional Recognition
Davide Balliano’s work has garnered significant recognition in recent years, with solo exhibitions at prominent institutions including Museo Novecento in Florence (2019), Bottega Veneta Maison in New York (2018), and MARCA – Museo delle Arti di Catanzaro in Italy (2018). He's also been featured in numerous group shows, demonstrating his growing presence on the international art scene. His works are held in prestigious permanent collections such as the Farnesina Experimenta at the Palazzo della Farnesina, the Galleria Comunale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Viareggio, and the William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation—testaments to the enduring quality and significance of his artistic vision. Recent exhibitions include Cardi Gallery in London (2024) and Tina Kim Gallery in New York (with recurring shows since 2017), further solidifying his position as a leading contemporary artist.A Synthesis of Tactile Possibilities
- Influences: Minimalism, abstract geometry, Italian modernism, architectural landscapes.
- Key Themes: The relationship between painting and sculpture, the identity of man in the age of technology, the sublime, existential inquiry, control versus chance.
- Materials & Techniques: Wood, metal, glass sculptures; hand-drawing, acrylic underpainting, plaster layering, sanding, scoring, diluted washes of paint, gravity-driven application.
- “Each piece opens to variable perceptual scenarios, alternating between predefined forms and their imperfections, clear surfaces and abrasions. The works resulting from this evolution become a synthesis of tactile possibilities and architectural references.” – Luigi Fassi, 2018
