A Life in Moonlight

Jacobus Theodorus Abels emerged from an Amsterdam merchant family, a background that provided the stability for a life dedicated to the quiet observation of light and shadow. Born in 1803, his early education took him to a boarding school in Hilversum, where he first encountered the presence of artists like B.C. Koekkoek. These early encounters planted the seeds for a career defined by the atmospheric nuances of the Dutch landscape. After a formative study trip to Germany in 1826, Abels returned to settle in The Hague, marking the beginning of a settled period of professional growth.

His training was rooted in the tradition of animal painting, having studied under Jan van Ravenswaay. This foundation in natural forms would later inform his approach to the living elements within his landscapes. His personal life was also intertwined with the Dutch art community; he married the daughter of P.G. van Os, a connection that brought him into close professional contact with established painters like P.F. van Os.

The Art of the Nocturne

While his early output focused on summer landscapes, a shift occurred after 1840. Abels turned his attention toward the nocturnal, finding a particular interest in river and cityscapes under the moon. He sought to capture the specific atmosphere of night, drawing inspiration from the 17th-century painter Aert van der Neer. His approach to these nocturnes was technically disciplined. He famously avoided the use of black, choosing instead to build depth through various shades of brown applied in multiple layers. This method achieved a certain translucency, allowing a sense of moonlight to filter through the paint.

His compositions often featured specific, recurring motifs that grounded his atmospheric studies:

  • High water levels where houses and windmills appear to sink into the landscape.
  • Small boats carrying fishermen positioned near the center of the scene.
  • The interplay of light on river surfaces and architectural silhouettes.

Final Years and Recognition

Abels moved through several Dutch cities during his later years, living in Haarlem between 1849 and 1853 before eventually moving to Arnhem. His technical skill earned him a place in the Royal Academy in Amsterdam and brought him success at various exhibitions, where he was awarded medals. His work remains held in collections such as the Museum at Haarlem.

The artist passed away in Abcoude on 11 June 1866. He left behind a body of work consisting of oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings that captured a specific, quiet corner of the Dutch landscape through the lens of Romanticism.
