A Life of Ink and Paper
Born in Beijing in 1753, the man known as Fashishan lived much of his life within the rhythms of the Qing dynasty court and the quiet corners of his own libraries. Originally named Yun Chang, he carried the courtesy name Kaiwen and used various art names like Shifan and Wumen. His early years were shaped by a rigorous study under his stepmother, Lady Han Taishu, who watched him closely by lamplight to ensure his reading never slackened. This discipline formed the foundation for a life spent among books and official duties.
His path through the imperial system was marked by both achievement and setback. He earned the Jinshi degree in 1780 and held several positions, including Examiner at the Imperial Academy and Director of the Guozijian. While he served in roles such as Storekeeper of the Imperial Gardens Weaving and Dyeing Bureau, his career saw periods of demotion due to errors in book compilation. He eventually retired from public life when illness took hold, leaving behind a legacy rooted more in scholarship than in the brushstrokes of a painter.
The Scholar's Collection
Fashishan was primarily a literary figure and an official rather than a visual artist. His true focus lay in the preservation and organization of knowledge. He participated in the massive undertaking of collating the Siku Quanshu, serving as the only Mongolian compiler during this period of the Qing dynasty. His residences, such as Shikan and the Wumen Study, were not merely homes but repositories for a vast amount of written material.
The sheer scale of his personal library is evident in the records left behind:
- His collections included over ten thousand volumes.
- He held 89 collections from the Song dynasty and 41 from the Yuan dynasty.
- He compiled the Cunsutang Bibliography, which spans four volumes.
Written Records and Legacy
The work he left behind consists of catalogs, poetry, and historical notes. His notebook, Taolu Miscellaneous Records, provides a look into the regulations of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Through works like Wumen Poetry Talks and his various poetry collections, such as the Cunsutang Shiji, he maintained a presence in the literary circles of his time for thirty years. He spent much of this time encouraging younger scholars and maintaining the traditions of the literati.
Though he was not a painter, his name is linked to visual history through works like Elegant Gathering at the Poetry Niche (1801), which features his involvement in a group setting. His life ended in 1813, leaving behind a trail of manuscripts and bibliographies that documented the intellectual landscape of his era.
