The textures of Enebakk
Erling Enger began his life in Fåberg Municipality, Norway, but much of his vision was shaped by the woods and farms of Enebakk. Before he turned to the brush, he studied forestry at As Agricultural University between 1921 and 1924. This early connection to the land stayed with him. He understood the weight of a tree and the way light settles on a field. In 1927, he moved to Oslo to pursue art, leaving behind the life of a forester for the studios of Statens Håndverks og Kunstindustriskole and later the Academy of Art.
His early years were marked by a restless search through materials. He experimented with powder painting, a method where dry pigment is sprinkled onto an adhesive ground to create texture. During the 1930s, his work carried the influence of German Expressionism and the techniques of Rolf Nesch. These years were about testing what a surface could hold. By 1942, his approach shifted. He moved away from these heavy experiments toward traditional oil painting, focusing on the clarity of the landscape and the people who lived within it.
A life in pigment and light
The subjects of his canvases were often found close to home. He painted the farmers, foresters, and livestock that populated the Enebakk region. His family frequently appeared in his work; his children, Per and Babben, served as models for his drawings and paintings. There was a quiet focus in how he placed a figure against a backdrop of newly-ploughed fields or grey strips of woods. He spoke simply of his process, noting that his goal was to get colors to agree with one another—the sky meeting the forest, and the forest meeting the earth.
As time passed, his style moved from a primitive, expressionist manner toward a more refined, lyrical mode of expression. While he could be naturalistic, his later works leaned into an abstract mode where the atmosphere of light and air became the primary concern. He sought to capture the mood of a motif through proximity rather than through grand gestures. His paintings, such as Vekstring svinger lua from 1940 and Gårdsgutten from 1943, reflect this steady, observant hand.
