Saving Food, Saving Lives: An Exploration of John Joseph Sheridan’s “Poster”

John Joseph Sheridan's "Poster," created in 1917 during the First World War, transcends mere visual decoration; it embodies a pivotal moment in American history and artistic expression. Produced by the United States Food Administration, this artwork serves as a powerful testament to the urgency of wartime conservation efforts and skillfully employs symbolism to galvanize public support for bolstering Allied forces.

• Subject Matter: The poster’s central image is a vibrant depiction of agricultural bounty – a basket overflowing with fruits and vegetables like carrots, broccoli, and cabbage. This deliberate selection wasn't arbitrary; it directly addressed the critical issue facing Europe at the time: widespread food shortages exacerbated by the conflict.
• Style & Technique: Sheridan’s artistic approach leans heavily into Art Deco influences, evident in the stylized rendering of the basket and the geometric backdrop. The use of bold colors—primarily yellows, reds, and greens—creates an energetic visual impact designed to capture attention and convey a sense of optimism amidst the anxieties of war.
• Historical Context: Launched during Woodrow Wilson’s presidency, the Food Administration recognized that securing domestic food production was paramount to sustaining morale and bolstering military capabilities abroad. Sheridan's poster directly responded to this imperative, mirroring the broader propaganda campaign aimed at fostering patriotism and encouraging responsible consumption habits.

Symbolism: The Flag and Its Significance

Dominating the upper portion of the composition is a prominent American flag—a deliberate symbol of national pride and resilience. Positioned against a sunset background, it represents not only the nation’s commitment to its allies but also embodies hope for brighter futures. Sheridan's masterful use of color enhances this symbolic resonance, conveying warmth and reassurance amidst the grim realities of battlefield experience.

• Color Palette: The sunset hues—warm oranges and reds—are carefully chosen to evoke feelings of comfort and encouragement.
• Composition: The flag’s placement reinforces the poster's core message: America stood united in its determination to persevere through adversity, bolstering its allies with vital resources.

Beyond Decoration: Emotional Impact & Artistic Legacy

"Poster," like many artworks produced during wartime, speaks powerfully to the human condition—specifically, the desire for unity and purpose in times of crisis. Sheridan’s work exemplifies the Art Deco movement's embrace of geometric forms and bold colors, reflecting a broader cultural shift toward modernity and optimism. Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to communicate complex ideas concisely and effectively, cementing its place as an iconic representation of American patriotism during World War I.

• Emotional Resonance: The poster’s vibrant imagery aims to inspire viewers with a sense of determination and collective responsibility—a message that continues to resonate today.
• Art Deco Influence: Sheridan's stylistic choices align perfectly with the broader aesthetic trends of the era, demonstrating how art responded to historical events.
