      The story of Cornelis Van Leemputten begins in the quiet village of Werchter, Belgium, where he was born into a family deeply connected to both the land and the arts. As the son of Jan Frans Van Leemputten and Elisabeth Hopland, his early years were shaped by a unique domestic environment; while his father was originally a farmer, a transition to Brussels in 1852 saw him become a painting restorer. This shift brought art into the very fabric of Cornelius's upbringing. Alongside his younger brother, Frans, Cornelius was encouraged by his father to practice the craft, receiving foundational lessons that would serve as the seeds for a lifelong devotion to painting. Though he later attended classes at the Antwerp Academy from 1855 to 1860, much of his artistic soul was forged through self-directed studies, wandering through the natural beauty of the Brabant and Campine regions in north-eastern Belgium.

      Mastery of the Pastoral and the Real

      Van Leemputment’s oeuvre is a profound meditation on the simplicity of rural existence, characterized by his evocative depictions of farmyard animals and sweeping landscapes.
