The Dual Life of a German Shipowner
Otto Ehrich moves through history not merely as a creator, but as a man of commerce. Born in 1897, his life is defined by a dual existence. On one hand, he navigates the practicalities of being a German shipowner. On the other, he engages with the delicate, fluid medium of watercolor. There is a tension in this duality, a balance between the heavy, industrial reality of maritime trade and the light, translucent nature of his artistic practice.
His work often captures specific moments in time, such as the 1988 piece Birnbaum - Weiler. In this watercolor, the artist uses a scale of 44 x 63 cm to translate a specific location into a visual record. The medium requires a certain decisiveness; once the pigment meets the paper, the movement is permanent. This mirrors the precision required in his professional life.
A Legacy in Pigment and Paper
The technical aspect of Ehrich's output reveals a preference for the controlled spontaneity of watercolor. Unlike the heavy textures of oil, his chosen medium demands an understanding of how water carries color across a surface. His pieces are often signed, marking a personal claim to the vision captured on the page. His life, spanning from 1897 to 1988, reflects a century of profound change in Germany, yet his focus remains on the intersection of his two distinct worlds.
