Born in the historic region of Bologna, Italy, Contardo Maria Tomaselli emerged as a master of precision and decorative elegance during the nineteenth century. His artistic journey was deeply rooted in the prestigious traditions of the Accademia bolognese di belle arti, where he honed his technical prowess under the guidance of esteemed masters. Studying ornament with Antonio Basoli and mastering the complexities of perspective with Francesco Cocchi, Tomaselli developed a unique ability to blend structural accuracy with ornamental beauty. His early years were marked by significant academic recognition, as he secured numerous school prizes between 1840 and 1847, followed by even more prestigious academic awards for his expertise in perspective and ornament from 1846 to 1854.
The trajectory of his career saw him move beyond the borders of Bologna, extending his influence into the Venetian artistic landscape. In 1850, he was called to teach at the Academy of Venice, likely serving as an assistant to Callisto Zanotti. This period in the Veneto region profoundly shaped his creative interests; rather than pursuing the dramatic world of theatrical scenography, Tomaselli turned his gaze toward the delicate art of decoration and the captivating genre of vedutismo, or view painting. His hands brought life to various architectural spaces, decorating rooms within the palace of Ambrogio Lugo outside Bologna, as well as significant portions of Villa Mocenigo in Bassano and the Guarnieri apartment in Feltre.

Tomaselli’s body of work is characterized by a meticulous devotion to detail and an extraordinary command over light and space. As a specialist in perspective and ornament, his compositions often captured the grandeur of architectural landmarks with a clarity that bordered on the scientific, yet remained imbued with artistic grace.
