Základné informácie

A Life Shaped by Light and Shadow

Born in Neusalz an der Oder, the young Christian David Gebauer moved to Christiansfeld in northern Schleswig during his early years. His father, a superintendent of the Moravian Church, had envisioned a different path for his son, hoping he would enter the priesthood. However, a childhood bout with measles at the age of three left him with permanent hearing damage, altering the course of his destiny. As his talent for drawing became apparent, the focus shifted from theology to the fine arts.

He sought formal training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, studying under C.A. Lorentzen around the year 1800. While his education was rooted in the academy, his true inspiration lay much further south. He looked toward the Dutch Masters, finding a profound connection to their approach to light and subject matter. This affinity for the Dutch style would define the character of his later works.

The Wanderings of an Artist

Through the use of various scholarships, Gebauer was able to travel through the great art centers of Europe. His travels took him to Munich, Vienna, and Dresden, where he stayed from 1813 to 1814. These excursions were not merely for leisure but were essential to his development as a painter of landscapes and animals. In Germany, he witnessed the heavy aftermath of the Battle of Dresden, an experience that stirred a deep interest in battle scenes. He found himself particularly drawn to the sight of captive Cossacks and their horses, subjects that he would later translate into numerous drawings and etchings.

His professional standing grew steadily within Denmark. In 1815, he was named a member of the Royal Academy, and by 1817, he had been granted an apartment at Charlottenborg Palace along with an annual pension. He spent many years in this prestigious setting, contributing architectural works such as overdoors to royal properties throughout the country.

The Quietude of the Danish Landscape

The work of Gebauer often captured the stillness of the natural world and the humble rhythms of rural life. His paintings frequently featured animals and landscapes, rendered with a precision that reflected his admiration for the Dutch tradition. He possessed a particular skill for depicting winter scenes, such as his 1828 work, Winterlandschaft mit Pferdeschlitten, and his Winter Landscape with Brabrand Church. In these pieces, one can observe the small, lived details of a village: hunters returning from the woods, laborers pulling laden sleds, and children playing upon the ice.

As his health began to decline, Gebauer moved to Aarhus. Despite the physical toll of his later years, he remained dedicated to his craft, opening a drawing school and eventually being appointed a Professor of Art in 1830. His life ended in Aarhus in 1831, shortly before he could assume his new academic duties. He left behind a body of work that remains a significant part of the Danish Golden Age, noted for its focus on:

  • Animal portraiture and studies of horses.
  • Detailed landscape paintings influenced by the Dutch style.
  • Etchings capturing the movement of battle and cavalry.
  • Architectural decorations for royal Danish estates.
