A Life Immersed in Color and Form: The Artistic Journey of Lavonna Patterson

Lavonna Patterson, a North Carolina native now residing in Idaho, embodies the spirit of a multifaceted creator. Her journey to becoming a celebrated artist is as rich and layered as the impasto textures that define her vibrant 3D works. Born and raised in the charming coastal town of New Bern, she developed an early appreciation for the natural world—a sensibility that would later infuse her art with dynamic energy and a keen eye for color. This formative period was followed by four years spent living overseas in Germany, broadening her perspective and introducing her to diverse cultural influences. Later, eighteen years in North Dakota provided a contrasting landscape, shaping her artistic vision further before she settled in the Northwest, finding inspiration in the rugged beauty of Idaho. Beyond her life as an artist, Patterson’s background as a retired PhD psychologist adds another dimension to her creative process—a depth of understanding about human perception and emotion that subtly informs her work.

From Psychology to Palettes: The Evolution of an Artistic Voice

Patterson's transition from the world of psychology to the realm of art is not merely a career shift, but a natural extension of her lifelong fascination with the inner workings of the mind and the power of visual communication. After earning her degree from Walden University in 2001, she spent two decades dedicated to counseling and helping others navigate their emotional landscapes. This experience instilled in her a profound empathy and an acute awareness of how color, form, and texture can evoke powerful responses. Her artistic exploration began as a means of personal expression, evolving organically over time into a passionate pursuit. While formally trained in psychology, Patterson’s art is largely self-taught, allowing for a unique freedom of experimentation and the development of her distinctive style. She describes this period as a journey of discovery—a process of learning through intuition, observation, and relentless practice.

The Allure of Three Dimensions: A Signature Style

Lavonna Patterson's artwork stands out for its striking use of three-dimensional forms and bold, multi-colored designs. Her pieces are not simply paintings; they are tactile experiences that invite viewers to engage with the work on a visceral level. She masterfully employs impasto techniques—building up layers of paint to create rich textures and dynamic surfaces. This technique isn’t merely aesthetic; it adds depth and movement, drawing the eye across the canvas and creating a sense of energy. Her palette is vibrant and expressive, often featuring contrasting hues that interplay harmoniously. Works like ‘3D Multi-Colored Design’ exemplify her signature style—abstract expressionist compositions bursting with geometric shapes and captivating color combinations. Patterson's art isn’t representational; it focuses on the emotional impact of form and color itself, inviting viewers to interpret the work through their own subjective experiences.

Themes and Influences: A Reflection of Life's Journey

While her work is abstract, Patterson’s art is deeply rooted in personal experience and a lifelong love of exploration. Her travels—from the coastal landscapes of North Carolina to the cultural richness of Germany and the vastness of the American Midwest—have all left their mark on her artistic vision. She draws inspiration from jazz music, photography, and literature, seamlessly blending these influences into her unique aesthetic language. The ocean remains a recurring motif in her life and work, symbolizing both tranquility and boundless energy. Her background as a psychologist also informs her art, subtly exploring themes of perception, emotion, and the human condition. Patterson’s pieces often evoke a sense of optimism and resilience—a testament to her belief in giving back to others and helping them navigate their own journeys.
