Andrew Esiebo: Capturing the Soul of Nigeria
Andrew Esiebo’s artistic journey began in Lagos, Nigeria, where he was born in 1978—a city pulsating with vibrant culture and grappling with rapid urbanization. From a young age, fueled by a gift from his friend Jose Maria – a camera – Esiebo embarked on a self-taught exploration of photography, documenting the transformative changes unfolding across Nigeria’s landscape. This formative experience instilled in him an unwavering dedication to portraying authentic narratives and fostering genuine connections within his subjects' worlds. Early influences included collaborations with Paul Udstrand, who nurtured Esiebo’s burgeoning talent by introducing him to seminal photographic works and establishing crucial artistic dialogues. Furthermore, assisting his uncle, Esiebo Joseph, in mastering the craft of black and white printing honed his technical skills and deepened his understanding of visual storytelling—a foundation that would underpin his subsequent endeavors. His professional career swiftly gained momentum as he transitioned from freelance photography to engaging in ambitious multimedia projects. Notably, Esiebo’s participation in “My Eye, My World,” a collaborative workshop empowering marginalized children in Nigeria, underscored his commitment to social responsibility and artistic outreach. Simultaneously, he spearheaded the “Living Queer African” project—a poignant exploration of LGBTQ+ experiences within West Africa—demonstrating his willingness to confront challenging themes with sensitivity and nuance. Esiebo’s distinctive photographic style—characterized by meticulous attention to detail, masterful use of depth of field, and evocative framing—has garnered international acclaim. Exhibitions at prestigious venues like the Sao Paulo Biennial, Dakart in Dakar, Senegal; the Biennale Cuvee in Linz, Austria; Photo Quai biennials in Paris; Guangzhou Triennial in China; Chobi Mela V Photo Festival in Bangladesh; Noorderlitch Photography Festival in the Netherlands; Bamako African Photography Encounters in Mali; and Lagos Photo Festival solidified his position as a leading voice in contemporary African photography. His work has been recognized by esteemed organizations such as UNESCO, Institut Français (formerly Cultures France), Gasworks International Residency Programme, The Photographers’ Gallery, Action Aid, WHO, UNICEF, Women for Women, MSH Nigeria and Time Out Nigeria—reflecting the breadth of his artistic engagement and collaborative spirit. Esiebo's dedication to capturing the essence of human experience—particularly within marginalized communities—continues to inspire artists and audiences alike.- Notable Residencies: Institut Francais (formerly Cultures France), Visa Pour Creation in Paris; Gasworks International Residency Programme, London; Gyeonggi Creation Center, South Korea
