A Life of Art and Science

Jean-François Léonor Mérimée was a French painter, chemist, and writer born in Broglie, France. His academic journey began at the Collège de Caen before he entered the Académie royale de peinture in 1778, studying under Gabriel-François Doyen and François-Élie Vincent. His talent was recognized through successive honors, including receiving second place in the Prix de Rome in 1787 and third place in 1788.
