The Life and Origins of David Krueger
David Krueger was born in 1959 in Jamestown, North Dakota. His roots are tied to this American landscape, a place that shaped the early years of his life. He remains an active presence in the art world today, continuing his practice as an American painter.
His beginnings in Jamestown provided a specific starting point for a life spent working with color and form. There is a sense of continuity in his presence, moving from those North Dakota origins into a career that spans several decades of production. He is still living and working, maintaining a steady connection to his craft.
Notable Works and Artistic Mediums
Krueger’s hand moves through a variety of textures, often layering different materials to build a surface. In his 1987 work Wild Life, he combined oil, charcoal, color pencil, and acrylic polymer on canvas. This piece measures 76 × 78 1/2 in. (193 × 199.4 cm). The weight of the charcoal and the density of the acrylic polymer create a specific presence on the large canvas.
He often works on paper, choosing tools that allow for immediate, direct marks. He has used chalk pastel and marker together, as well as watercolor and marker, to define his subjects. In other instances, he has applied acrylic and marker to paper to achieve different levels of opacity and line weight.
Where to See the Works Today
One can find a significant piece of his output within the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This specific work, titled Wild Life, carries the object number 1988.311. It entered the museum's holdings through the Edith C. Blum Fund, 1988.
The presence of his work in such a setting allows for a close look at the textures of oil, charcoal, color pencil, and acrylic polymer on canvas. Seeing it in person provides a sense of the scale and the physical layers applied to the surface. It remains a quiet part of the museum's modern and contemporary art holdings.
