A Life Between Two Worlds

In the quiet region of Moselle, within the French town of Uckange, a young girl began to find her voice through the tip of a brush. Born into a Jewish family in 1868, Anna Clémence Bertha Abraham Worms possessed an early, driving ambition that led her to the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris by the age of thirteen. There, she sat before the masters, absorbing the techniques of Tony Robert-Fleury, Gustave Boulanger, and Benjamin Constant. Her talent was not merely a hobby but a vocation; by seventeen, she had already secured a degree as a teacher of drawing from the Ministry of Public Instruction, beginning her career in communal schools.

Fate eventually pulled her away from the familiar streets of France when she married Fernando Samuel Worms, a dental surgeon from Brazil. This union brought her to the southern reaches of Brazil for two years before the couple settled permanently in São Paulo. In this new landscape, she did not merely adapt; she flourished. She established her own drawing and painting course, creating a space where art could be shared through yearly student exhibitions, effectively planting the seeds of artistic instruction in her adopted home.

The Brush and the Medal

Her work often turned toward the intimate and the observational, finding beauty in genre scenes and the quiet dignity of portraits. The skill she honed in Paris found a grand stage in Rio de Janeiro, where her presence at the Salão Nacional de Belas Artes in 1895 earned her a gold medal. This recognition marked her as a significant figure in the Brazilian art scene. She continued to contribute to the cultural fabric of São Paulo, participating in the first Exposição Brasileira de Belas Artes at the São Paulo School of Arts and Crafts in 1911, and presenting works during the Centenário da Independência celebrations at the Palácio das Indústrias in 1922.

The themes she explored were as varied as her travels. One might find her capturing the essence of distant cultures or the melancholy of displacement in works such as Bedouin, an oil on canvas from the 1890s, or Homesick for Naples. Her repertoire included pieces like Sentimental Song and Rua Tabatinguera, 1860, each reflecting a keen eye for detail and a deep connection to her subjects. In her later years, she even shared the light of the studio with her son, Gastão Worms, holding a joint exhibition with him in 1923.

A Lasting Presence in São Paulo

Bertha Worms remained a fixture of the Brazilian artistic community until her death in São Paulo in 1937. Her legacy is found not only in the canvases that remain in collections like the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo but in the lineage of students she taught and the academic rigor she brought to her classes. She lived as a bridge between the classical traditions of France and the emerging artistic identity of Brazil, leaving behind a body of work that speaks of both her European training and her South American life.
