Gertler's forename was Anglicised to “Mark” in 1896 when his family emigrated from Austria to London. From a young age, he demonstrated exceptional artistic talent—drawing captivated him—and enrolled at Regent Street Polytechnic in 1906 despite facing considerable financial hardship. The school’s closure due to the Great Depression forced him to abandon his studies prematurely. However, his determination persisted as he secured an apprenticeship at Clayton & Bell stained glass makers while simultaneously pursuing evening classes at the Polytechnic.
