      Jerry Farnsworth was an American painter born in Dalton, GA in 1895. During his formative years, he studied at the Corcoran School of Art and with Charles W. Hawthorne.Not always a professional artist, Farnsworth worked in cotton and steel mills, dispensed soda at a drug store, and was a Fuller Brush man and a Western Union messenger boy.During his lifetime, he was a member of The National Arts Club, an Academican of the National Academy of Design, and the Salmagundi Club, all of which are located in New York City. He received many recognitions for his work, including awards from The National Arts Club, National Academy of Design,Los Angeles Museum of Art and Grand Central Galleries. He also wrote several books, including Painting with Jerry Farnsworth, Learning to Paint in Oil and Portrait and Figure Painting.In addition to NAC, Farnsworth

      A Life of Labor and Light

      Before he was a fixture of the American art scene, Jerry Farnsworth lived a life defined by the grit of manual work. Born in Dalton, Georgia, in 1895, his early years were far removed from the quietude of a studio. He moved through various roles that demanded physical endurance, working in cotton and steel mills, serving as a Western Union messenger boy, and even laboring as a Fuller Brush man. There was a certain rhythm to this period of his life, one that preceded the more measured pace of his later years. Even while stationed in Washington, D. and.C. with the U.S. Navy between 1916 and 1919, he sought out evening art courses at the Corcoran School of Art.

      This period of transition eventually led him to the coast. In 1921, Farnsworth arrived in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where his path was shaped by the instruction of Charles W. Hawthorne. It was here that the technical foundations of his work began to solidify. He later studied with Dewitt Clinton Peters in New York, absorbing a tradition of portraiture and figure painting that would become his hallmark. His life was often shared with his wife, the artist Helen Alton Sawyer, and together they established a presence in both the summer colonies of Cape Cod and the winter landscapes of Sarasota, Florida.

      The Art of the Human Form

      Farnsworth’s practice was rooted in the observation of people. He specialized in portrait, figure, landscape, and genre painting, often focusing on the quiet dignity found in everyday subjects. His work frequently captured a sense of focused intention, as seen in pieces like Working Girl, which reflects the era's atmosphere of determination. His ability to render the human presence was recognized through commissions that reached far beyond local galleries; he produced portraits for the covers of Time and Fortune magazines, including a notable depiction of Sara Delano Roosevelt.

      His technical approach relied on oil on canvas and panel, utilizing a method that respected the traditions of the old masters while remaining contemporary to his era. This skill earned him several accolades, including:

      • Six awards from the National Academy of Design
      • The Hallgarten Prize in 1925 and 1927
      • Recognition from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art
      • The Golden State Prize in 1928

      Beyond the canvas, he was a dedicated educator. He operated the Farnsworth School of Art in North Truro and Sarasota, passing on his knowledge of oil painting to others. His instructional books, such as Learning to Paint in Oil, remain part of his pedagogical record.

      By the time of his death in 1983, Farnsworth had left a substantial mark on American institutional collections. His paintings are held in several prominent repositories, ensuring that his specific vision of American life remains accessible to scholars and the public alike. These include:
