A Life in the Dutch Republic and England
Pieter Hermansz Verelst was a Dutch Golden Age painter born in Dordrecht. His life was marked by significant movement across the Low Countries; he began his career in Dordrecht, where he became a member of the city's Guild of Saint Luke in 1638. Following a slump in the art market, Verelst moved with some of his children to London, where he died in England.
Verelst was a father to several painters, including his sons Herman, Simon, John, and William. His workshop in The Hague was a place of active instruction, where he trained his sons and other pupils.
