The Foundations of a Painter
Johann Peter Theodor Janssen began his life in Düsseldorf, born to an engraver named Tamme Weyert Theodor Janssen. His early training came from his father's own hands, learning the precise lines of engraving before moving toward the broader strokes of painting. He later entered the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied under Karl Ferdinand Sohn and Eduard Bendemann. These years in the academy shaped his approach to the canvas.
His path was closely tied to the academic traditions of his home city. By 1877, he had attained the position of professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, and later, in 1895, he took on the role of director for the institution. His life remained rooted in this circle of German art education and practice.
A Focus on History and Scale
Janssen’s work often occupied large, public spaces. He worked with a sense of scale that moved beyond the individual frame to cover walls and ceilings. His murals in the New Exchange in Bremen, depicting the colonization of the Baltic Sea Provinces by the Hansa in 1201, show a commitment to historical narrative. In Berlin, his sequence regarding the myth of Prometheus occupied the Cornelius Room of the Alte Nationalgalerie between 1874 and 1876.
He brought similar large-scale narratives to other civic buildings:
- The Erfurt City Hall, where he completed nine murals detailing scenes from the history of the city by 1882.
- The University of Marburg's Alte Universität building, featuring a seven-part sequence about the legend of Otto der Schütze and Marburg's history between 1895 and 1903.
- The Aula of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he painted friezes and ceilings titled Human Life, Imagination, Beauty, and Nature between 1886 and 1896.
Technique and Recognition
His painting style leaned toward a monumental approach paired with naturalism. This method allowed him to populate his historical scenes with many life-size figures, as seen in his 1893 work, Walter Dodde und die bergischen Bauern bei der Schlacht bei Worringen. This particular piece, which hangs in the Düsseldorf City Hall, earned him a great gold medal at the first Große Berliner Kunstausstellung in 1893.
Other notable oil paintings from his career include Die Verleugnung Petri, completed in 1869, and Die Kindheit des Bacchus, finished in 1882. His work was recognized by the Prussian Academy of Arts, where he was elected a member in 1885. He remained active in the German art scene until his death in Düsseldorf in 1908.
