His work for the stage emphasized line and colour over painted detail. He also designed programmes, exhibition posters, and advertising posters.
He maintained close connections with several notable figures in the arts:
- Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec: A close friend and frequent companion.
- Ignacio Zuloaga: A fellow student and future brother-in-law.
- Marcel Proust: A prominent writer-friend who discussed Dethomas' landscapes of Venice.
His works are held in collections such as the Musée d'Orsay, the Hermitage Museum, and the National Gallery of Art.
