The Scholar and the Canvas

Marcel Maeyer was a man of both the archive and the easel, a figure whose life was split between the rigorous study of art history and the tactile creation of visual works. Born in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, his early inclinations toward painting were nurtured by his uncle, the painter Alfons Proost. This early instruction provided a foundation that would eventually merge with a deep academic pursuit. After studying art history at the University of Ghent, Maeyer entered the professional world of museums, serving as a curator at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Antwerp. It was during these years of institutional service that his own practice began to take shape, often using photographs as the essential starting point for his compositions.

His career followed a path of intellectual expansion, moving from the quiet halls of Belgian museums to the lecture halls of academia. In the 1960s, he held a professorship in art history at the University of Groningen. This period of teaching and scholarship eventually gave way to a singular focus on his own creative output. He moved away from the theoretical to the physical, dedicating his later years entirely to the act of painting.

Exhibitions and Recognition

Maeyer’s presence in the international art circuit was marked by several significant appearances that placed his work alongside the major movements of his era. His reach extended far beyond the borders of Belgium, reaching audiences through prestigious international venues. His contributions were recognized through several key milestones:

  • The Venice Biennale in 1976
  • The São Paulo Biennale in 1979
  • Documenta IX in Kassel in 1992

These exhibitions were accompanied by major solo shows, including those at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Antwerp. His work was not merely a hobby of a scholar, but a serious pursuit that commanded attention in the most respected galleries of Europe.

Material and Form

The physical nature of Maeyer's work often moved beyond the flat surface of a traditional canvas. He experimented with texture and depth, creating works that interacted with light and space through the use of relief. In his 1969 series titled Environnement, he utilized acrylic paint on plaster and plastic materials mounted on wood. These reliefs were complex, layered objects that challenged the boundaries of two-dimensional painting. His technical approach was precise, often leaving signatures and dates directly on the work, such as the specific notations found on his relief pieces from 1969.

He passed away in 2018, shortly after the death of his wife. He left behind a body of work that reflects a life spent observing the history of art and attempting to translate that observation into a tangible, textured reality.
