Amsterdam, 1680. A child is born into a city defined by its canals and commerce. Jacob Appel grows up in the shadow of the Dutch Golden Age, finding his way into the studios of established masters. Between 1690 and 1692, he sits at the feet of Timotheus de Graaf, absorbing the fundamentals of the craft. The training continues under David Van der Plaas, who directs his attention toward the complexities of landscape painting.
The early years of his career are marked by imitation. He looks to the works of Tempesta, attempting to replicate that specific energy and structure. It is a period of mimicry and foundational learning. Eventually, the influence of Tempesta fades, replaced by the approach of Albert Meijeringh. This shift marks a change in his visual language.
A Dual Focus
Appel does not restrict himself to a single subject. His brush moves between the quietude of the natural world and the structured presence of human subjects. He captures landscapes, yet he also turns his attention to portraits. One such work, a portrait of Jacob Mossel from the 1730s, exists as oil on copper, a small but precise window into the era.

A Final Chapter in Amsterdam
The 18th century progresses, and Appel remains a fixture of the Dutch art scene. His name is linked to specific historical curiosities, most notably his role as a painter for the famous dollhouse of Petronella Oortman. This detail places his work within the intimate, highly detailed domestic culture of the time.
The end comes in 1751. He dies in Amsterdam at approximately seventy years of age. He leaves behind a body of work that reflects the transition from the imitation of past masters to a settled, personal style shaped by the Dutch landscape and the faces of his contemporaries.
