His formative years were spent in Ecclesfield, Sheffield, where he absorbed the rhythms of rural life and developed an enduring fascination with the Yorkshire countryside. Studying at Sheffield Technical School of Art from 1904 onwards, he honed his skills under Oliver Senior, whose influence shaped Royle’s artistic sensibilities and encouraged him to exhibit at the Royal Academy.
