For the 5th EDITION of WOOL, once again we brought to Covilhã a group of 4 artists, 2 portuguese and 2 foreigners.Pastel (Argentina), Roc Blackblock (Spain), Aheneah (Portugal) and Draw (Portugal) were invited to develop interventions in the historic center, once again inspired by the local identity, which we consider to be everything that makes this place unique: traditions, songs, gastronomy, personalities, history, fauna and flora, etc. After surprising everyone with the identity of WOOL 2018 in carpet form (and material), Aheneah came to Covilhã to pay homage to her great-grandmother Narcisa, to whom she owes all the teachings that she continues to practice and promote in her daily work.I think we can extend the thread and say that this is a tribute to all the great-grandparents, grandmothers and mothers who help (or try to) keep these traditions alive.

The Tactile Poetics of Ana Martins

In the contemporary landscape of textile art, few voices resonate with as much structural intrigue and ancestral depth as Ana Martins, known to the international art world by her moniker, aheneah. A Portuguese artist born in 1996, Martins has cultivated a practice that exists at the intersection of memory and materiality. Her work does not merely occupy space; it inhabits it, weaving together the delicate threads of historical tradition with the bold, often unsettling language of modern installation. Based in New York, her creative identity is deeply rooted in the transition from the analog to the digital—a period of instability that informs her fascination with how materials, technologies, and perceptions are constantly in flux.

The foundation of Martins’ practice is built upon a profound connection to her heritage. Much of her artistic DNA can be traced back to the teachings of her great-grandmother, Narcisa, whose influence serves as a living bridge to the past. This lineage is particularly evident in her engagement with traditional Portuguese techniques such as crochet, weaving, and bobbin lace. However, Martins does not treat these methods as static relics of folklore; instead, she approaches them with a researcher’s curiosity, stripping them of their functional expectations to see what they might become when released from tradition. By applying these ancient rhythms to contemporary contexts, she creates a sculptural language that hovers between the organic form of an organism and the rigid permanence of architecture.

Materiality and the Sublime

Martins’ technical mastery lies in her ability to manipulate fiber until it defies its own nature. Her signature approach involves a transformative layering process where soft, familiar textiles are juxtaposed against uncompromising materials like metal and concrete. This tension creates works that appear both gravity-defying and monumentally grounded, evoking a sense of the uncanny. Through the careful use of repetition, accumulation, and scale, she pushes fibers toward the edge of the sublime, turning them into remnants that feel as though they belong to an unknown or distant future. Her work invites the viewer into a sensory dialogue, where the tactile quality of the piece becomes a medium for exploring themes of resilience and metamorphosis.

The conceptual depth of her installations often explores the following elements:

  • Texture and Transformation: The metamorphosis of ordinary fibers into monumental, immersive sculptures.
  • Structural Tension: The interplay between the flexibility of thread and the rigidity of industrial materials.
  • Ancestral Narrative: Using historical weaving techniques to pay homage to maternal lineages and cultural identity.
  • Spatial Perception: Creating installations that challenge the boundaries between body, architecture, and environment.

A Growing Legacy in Global Spaces

The trajectory of Martins’ career has been marked by significant academic and professional milestones that have brought her work to prestigious global stages. Her pursuit of an MFA at the Parsons School of Design in New York City provided her with the critical tools necessary to expand her textile manipulations into large-scale, ambitious installations. This academic rigor, combined with her innate connection to craft, has allowed her to participate in high-profile exhibitions ranging from the United Nations in New York to the Saint-Martin Museum in Colmar.

Her recognition extends beyond gallery walls into significant cultural collaborations and collections. From her impactful interventions in the historic center of Covilhã during the WOOL festival—where she honored local identity through fiber—to her presence in the collections of major entities like Taguspark and the Bissaya Barreto Foundation, Martins continues to push the boundaries of what textile art can achieve. As her practice evolves, she remains a vital figure in contemporary art, reminding us that even the most delicate thread can hold the weight of history and the promise of the future.
