The Architectural Eye of Miklos Suba
Born in Szatmár County, Kingdom of Hungary, Miklos Suba was a painter trained in the discipline of architecture. After graduating from the Royal Hungarian Technical University of Budapest in 1902 and studying at the Vienna Academy in 1903, he spent two decades working as an architect. His early years involved traveling and painting throughout England, France, the Netherlands, and Italy before returning to Budapest. In 1924, he immigrated to the United States, eventually settling in Brooklyn, New York, where he lived for the remainder of his life. While he continued to practice architecture for many years, he dedicated himself fully to painting in 1940.

His subject matter was deeply intimate, focusing on the specific areas of Brooklyn within walking distance of his residences. His compositions captured:
Suba was particularly fascinated by barber poles, creating scale models of them from various Brooklyn locations, which were later featured in an exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum.
