The Life and Artistic Journey of Jacques Yankel
Born Jakob Kikoïne in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, Jacques Yankel was a multifaceted French artist who worked as a painter, sculptor, and lithographer. His early years were spent in La Ruche before his family moved to Montrouge and later to Montparnasse. During World War II, he held various jobs in engraving and printing workshops and eventually moved to Toulouse, where he studied to become an apprentice geologist. After graduating from the Faculté des sciences de Toulouse, he worked for the Ministry of the Overseas, conducting geological mapping in French West Africa. This period of travel sparked a deep interest in African art, which he began to collect.
Yankel's public debut as a painter occurred in 1952 at the Galerie Lara Vinci in Paris. His career was marked by several prestigious honors, including the Prix Neumann and the Prix Fénéon. Throughout his life, he was a dedicated educator, serving as a plastic arts teacher at the ENSBA from 1968 until 1985. His work has been featured in various public collections, including the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris and the Musée Helena Rubinstein.
Artistic Style and Evolution
The evolution of Yankel's work saw him move from expressionism in the 1950s toward a greater freedom of plastic invention and abstract expressionism after 1960. His technique was noted for its use of pure, vibrant colors and a focus on essential rhythms. He was known to apply paint directly with his fingers and full tubes to capture the primordial rhythms of his subjects, such as the furrows of the earth or the wrinkles of nature.
His creative output extended beyond the canvas into literature; he published works such as The Despair of the painter and Worse to paint, which utilized humor and self-mockery. His artistic legacy is preserved in numerous collections across France, Israel, and Switzerland.
