Born in Montreal, Canada, Etienne Zack is a Canadian-American painter who has developed a significant presence in the contemporary art world. His formal training includes attending Concordia University in 1997 and later earning a diploma from the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver in 2000. Throughout his career, Zack has explored themes involving architecture, power, and the construction of history. His early works often focused on the urban environments of Vancouver, engaging with socio-political commentary and challenging dominant economic structures within those landscapes.
Zack's practice has evolved to examine how history is constructed, specifically looking at how objects and events are selectively preserved or erased. This exploration of systems of control and institutional power was central to his 2016 solo exhibition at the Esker Foundation, which featured his "book series" produced between 2013 and 2016.

Etienne Zack has received numerous prestigious accolades, including the 1st Prize in the 2005 RBC Canadian Painting Competition and the Pierre-Ayot Prize from the City of Montréal in 2008.
