Alice Pasquini: A Voice Painted on Urban Walls

Born in Rome in 1980, Alice Pasquini’s artistic journey is a vibrant tapestry woven from street art, illustration, design, and a profound engagement with the human experience. Initially steered away from formal art training by her parents – who envisioned a more conventional path – Pasquini discovered her true calling amidst the rebellious energy of 1990s hip-hop culture, finding inspiration in the bold imagery of comic artist Luca Enoch’s “Sprayliz.” This early encounter ignited a passion for visual storytelling that would ultimately lead her to transform city walls into powerful canvases, narrating intimate stories and challenging conventional perspectives.

Her formal education provided a crucial foundation. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, followed by an MA in critical art studies at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. These academic pursuits, combined with her experience designing children’s playgrounds and working as an illustrator, shaped her approach to art – one that seeks to connect with everyday life and capture fleeting moments of genuine emotion. She also honed her skills through a period studying animation at the Ars Animation School in Madrid, further expanding her creative toolkit.

The Evolution of a Street Artist

Pasquini’s artistic development is marked by a fascinating evolution from initial explorations with stencil techniques – influenced by the iconic C215 – to a more freehand approach. This shift reflects a deepening commitment to direct, intuitive expression. Early works focused on portraying women in a bold and unapologetic manner, challenging stereotypes and celebrating feminine vitality. She began documenting the lives of ordinary people—a bus ride, a cafe conversation, a shared glance—transforming these seemingly mundane moments into compelling narratives.

Her travels across Europe and beyond – including residencies in New York, Berlin, London, Sydney, Buenos Aires, and numerous cities throughout Italy – have profoundly influenced her work. Each location contributes to the rich tapestry of experiences that inform her art, resulting in a distinctive visual language characterized by muted colors, layered textures, and a subtle yet powerful sense of symbolism. She’s not simply painting images; she's creating dialogues with the urban landscape itself.

Monumental Murals and Collaborative Projects

Pasquini is perhaps best known for her monumental murals, which have graced public spaces in over 100 cities worldwide. These large-scale works are often conceived as immersive experiences, inviting viewers to contemplate the stories they depict. Notable projects include a permanent installation at the Farnesina Collection (“Under Layers”), the first 3D street art installation in Italy, and her involvement in the creation and direction of CVTà Street Fest in Civitacampomarano since 2016 – a testament to her dedication to fostering community engagement through public art.

Her collaborations extend beyond murals, encompassing projects with major international brands such as Nike, Canon, Canada Goose, Ford, and Microsoft. These partnerships demonstrate her versatility as an artist and her ability to seamlessly integrate artistic vision with commercial objectives. She’s not confined to a single medium; she embraces diverse creative avenues, including illustration, set design, and animation.

Recognition and Legacy

Alice Pasquini's work has garnered significant international recognition, appearing in prestigious publications like the New York Times International, The Wall Street Journal, and Italian media outlets such as La Repubblica and Il Messaggero. In 2023, she received the Knight of Merit of the Italian Republic, the highest honor bestowed by the nation for contributions to the arts – a profound acknowledgement of her impact on contemporary art and culture.

Her work is also included in Italy’s Treccani Encyclopedia online, solidifying her place as a significant figure in the country's artistic landscape. In 2024, Treccani published “Taccuini,” a collection of sketches and notes documenting her travels and creative process, offering a rare glimpse into the mind of this prolific and visionary artist. Pasquini continues to push boundaries, exploring new techniques and engaging with diverse communities through her art, ensuring that her voice will continue to resonate on urban walls for years to come.
