The Sculptural Language of the Everyday
Tony Feher was an American sculptor born in Albuquerque, United States. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978, he worked various jobs, including as a store clerk and an architect's assistant, before moving to New York. His sculptural installations often utilized the brightly colored plastic beverage container as a signature material, arranging these objects into minimalist compositions or three-dimensional abstractions. His work frequently incorporated discarded items such as vacant consumer packaging, toys, and novelties, creating arrangements that functioned like a hobo altar, a curio cabinet, or a TSA contraband table.
His practice involved collecting and arranging foundlings with a specific precision. These elements were often parts of his daily environment before being placed in a gallery or museum setting. His exhibitions have been held in numerous locations, including:
Life and Artistic Legacy
Feher's childhood involved frequent movement as his father was a Navy commander. This early environment coincided with a curiosity for tinkering with and transforming everyday objects. In the 1980s, while living in New York, he contracted AIDS. His work was occasionally associated with the ephemeral and fleeting nature of life as an HIV-positive man. He died in New York City from liver cancer complications.
