Early Life and Training of Tinus de Jongh

Born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on 31 January 1885, Tinus de Jongh began his professional life far from the canvas. He started his career working as a decorator in the Netherlands, a practical beginning that grounded his understanding of color and form. Though he would eventually find his way into fine art, he was a self-taught painter, developing his skills through practice and observation rather than formal academic instruction.

In April 1911, he married Johanna Maria Verhoef. Together, they built a life that would eventually see the family move far from his Dutch origins. Tinus and Johanna had three children: Wilhelmina, Petronella, and Gabriel. The family's connection to art would continue through the next generation, as his son, Gabriel de Jongh, grew up to become a landscape artist in South Africa.

Artistic Style and Technique

In his early years, his work reflected a sober style rooted in the Dutch tradition. These initial pieces often relied on a muted palette, focusing on the quiet details of life. However, his move to South Africa changed the way he saw color. The intense light and the vast landscapes of his new home pushed him to abandon those subdued tones. He began to use much more saturated colors to capture the true essence of the African sun and terrain.

As he became more immersed in the local scenery, his physical approach to the canvas shifted as well. To capture the specific character of Cape landscapes, particularly those featuring gabled farmhouses, he moved away from careful, considered brushwork. He adopted a broader palette knife technique, applying paint with a more direct and heavy hand. This change allowed him to translate the ruggedness of the landscape into something more tactile and immediate.

Beyond his oils, he was a prolific etcher. These prints were highly sought after, with hundreds of them finding homes through his dealer, Louis Woolf. His ability to translate his vision into these smaller, detailed works helped establish his presence in the art market.

Career and Notable Works

Tinus de Jongh achieved early recognition in the Netherlands, where the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam purchased one of his early pictures. This success preceded his move to South Africa in 1921, a transition that would fundamentally change the direction of his work. The intense light and the specific landscapes of his new home prompted him to move away from his earlier, more muted palette, embracing much more saturated colors to capture the local scenery.

His output was prolific and varied, ranging from oil paintings to etchings. He became particularly known for his depictions of Cape landscapes, often featuring gabled farmhouses. These subjects were so popular that they created a significant demand for his work. Among his notable pieces is the etching Glenconnor Stellenbosch, Cape. His ability to translate the essence of the South African landscape into his art made him a highly popular figure in the region.

His legacy is preserved in various collections, including the Stedelijk Museum, Alkmaar, which holds his work Weigh House and Cheese Market. His son, Gabriel de Jongh, followed in his footsteps to become a landscape artist in South Africa, continuing the family's connection to the land through art.
