Robert de Caluwé was a painter and iconographer born in Sas van Gent, Netherlands. His life was deeply intertwined with religious and academic pursuits, serving as a Catholic priest of the Byzantine rite of the Russian tradition. After studying at the Gregorian University in Rome, he was ordained in 1939 and sent to Finland. He was also a philologist, translator, and art historian who authored works on iconography and heraldry in several languages, including Finnish, Dutch, German, and Swedish.

His work contributed to the revival of traditional religious art in Finland. His pedagogical influence extended through his students, including Kjellaug Nordsjö, Helena Vartiaisen, Sirkku Lehtinen, Paula Kirsi, and Solrunn Nes.
