The Life and Art of Hans Bohrdt
Hans Bohrdt was a German artist and a self-taught painter who became a prominent figure in the era of marine painting. His deep connection to the sea began at the age of fifteen after a visit to the port of Hamburg. Though he studied sporadically at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, he found the classical training of drawing from plaster copies to be a hindrance to his chosen field. Instead, he developed his skills as an autodidact, eventually becoming a celebrated painter of the Wilhelmine era. His work often focused on the maritime world, including the depiction of large vessels with three or four funnels, as well as the cargoes and passengers they carried.
Bohrdt’s career was marked by a close relationship with Kaiser Wilhelm II, who took a liking to his work and funded his projects, which were often nationalistic in nature. The Kaiser even granted him a spacious villa in Berlin in 1906. In 1915, Bohrdt created his most famous illustration, "The Last Man", which depicts a German navy sailor holding a German flag as his ship sinks during the Battle of the Falkland Islands. This image became a widely recognized propaganda tool used to inspire courage. Throughout his career, he utilized tempera for his illustrations, a medium well-suited for reproduction as a print.
Later Years and Legacy
Following World War I, the reduction of the merchant fleet and the confiscation of ships meant that Bohrdt no longer received the same commissions he once held. During the 1920s, he found a livelihood drawing maritime postcards, book illustrations, magazine images, and newspaper illustrations. While the recovery of the Merchant Marine brought new commissions, he struggled to remain in step with the spirit of the times. He eventually passed away in a retirement home in 1945.
The legacy of his work is preserved through various collections, including:
- Posters, prints, and reproductions held in museum collections.
- Paintings and illustrations that showcase his technical virtuosity and skill as an illustrator.
