The Quietude of Form

Gregers Jensen’s early work carries a certain stillness. When he first emerged in 1935, his canvases were built from broad, simplified color surfaces. These early compositions often felt introverted, using a muted and dark palette to create a sense of quietude. There was a decorative quality to these shapes, even as they remained rooted in a naturalistic approach to the world around him.

As the years passed, the way he applied paint began to shift. The large, robust planes of color gave way to something more tactile. He started to let the individual brushstroke become visible, using the rhythmic distribution of lines and contours to create a sense of movement. His subjects were often found in the immediate surroundings, drawing from the quiet details of family life and the landscapes of the places where he lived.

A Shift in Vision

His movements through the landscape reflected a changing relationship with his subjects. In the late 1930s, he resided in Odsherred, finding inspiration in the local terrain. Later, his life took him to Norway, where the environment continued to inform his visual language. His evolution was marked by several distinct phases:

  • A period of naturalism characterized by simplified forms and dark, subdued tones.
  • A transition toward visible brushwork and rhythmic, linear compositions.
  • A move into pure non-figurative painting during the 1960s.
  • Experiments with three-dimensional constructions, moving from geometric surfaces to organic, bark-like forms.

This progression saw him moving away from the recognizable world and toward the abstract. By the 1960s, his work had become entirely non-figurative. This was evident in large-scale projects, such as a thirty-square-meter wall decoration at Kolding Seminarium, where he used twenty-nine painted wooden boards to create a pattern primarily within a grayscale scale.

Material and Texture

Jensen’s curiosity extended beyond the flat surface of a canvas. He began to experiment with color cuts and relief-like constructions, sometimes working with metal to achieve a sense of depth. His early three-dimensional work was defined by a strict, geometric style with clearly defined surfaces. As he aged, these shapes became more organic, resembling the textures of curled bark. Whether working in gouache, black and white drawings, or metal, he remained focused on how light and form interact within a space.
